Intense Heat Wave Sets Temperature Records across Ukraine

Intense heat, which has been prevailing in most regions of Ukraine recently, is breaking temperature records. Such high air temperatures in the first half of July are quite unusual for the country. This was reported by Contrakti.UA, citing TSN.

In particular, in Kyiv on July 11, three temperature records were recorded, reported the Central Geophysical Observatory named after Boris Sreznevsky. The minimum air temperature in the capital was +21.7°C, which exceeded the previous record from 1938 by 0.3°C. The maximum temperature reached +34.2°C — 0.5°C higher than the previous record from 1885. The average daily temperature was +28.1°C, exceeding the previous record from 1922 by 0.5°C and the climatic norm by 7.2°C.

New historical records for this date were also recorded in various regions of the country, according to «Ukrgidromettsentr». For example:

  • Sumy — 35.1 degrees Celsius
  • Kropyvnytskyi — 37.5 degrees Celsius
  • Kherson — 39 degrees Celsius
  • Mykolaiv — 40.2 degrees Celsius
  • Odesa — 36.2 degrees Celsius
  • Vinnytsia — 36.3 degrees Celsius
  • Ternopil — 33.1 degrees Celsius
  • Chernivtsi — 33.6 degrees Celsius
  • Lviv — 33.4 degrees Celsius
  • Uzhgorod — 34.3 degrees Celsius

It is expected that this week in Ukraine, an extreme heat wave will continue, with temperatures up to +41°C in the southern, eastern, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kirovohrad regions, and up to +38°C in other regions. The cause of this heatwave is tropical air from northern Africa. Gradual relief from the heat can be expected as early as July 20.
