The Mykolaiv Regional Ethnographic Gallery has published interesting information on social media about the oldest astronomical institution in Eastern Europe.

Archaeological excavations confirm that a sanctuary of the Scythians once stood in the place where the observatory is located.

The observatory itself is located on the top of Spassky Hill, which rises 52 meters above sea level. Its territory covers 9 hectares, with a habitat for a variety of endangered plant species. This corner, located in the heart of Mykolaiv, has remained undeveloped throughout the city’s existence.

The first director and astronomer of the observatory was Karl Knorre, who was not even 20 years old at the time. He held this position for over half a century.

The Mykolaiv Observatory was a place of scientific research of international importance. Under Knorre’s leadership, the 5th sheet of the stellar map of the Berlin Academy of Sciences was compiled here.

The MY ART platform has published digitized postcards and engravings related to the observatory.
