Container and Ferry Transportation to Return to Ukraine Soon

Deputy Minister of Development of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Yuriy Vaskov has announced that container and ferry transportation may resume in Ukraine within the next few weeks. According to Vaskov, every container terminal in the country is ready to handle container ships, with negotiations already underway with potential ship owners and container lines. The first container ship is expected to pass through the sea corridor in a few days, much earlier than initially anticipated. Ferry transportation is also set to resume within a week.

After the major war in Ukraine, significant changes were made to the logistics of delivering goods in the country. The main unloading ports shifted to relatively small Danube ports in the Odessa region. Protests by Polish farmers further complicated the situation by blocking ground transportation routes, leaving only the road through Romania as an option.

Industry experts highlight the importance of opening at least one of the five container terminals in the ports of Greater Odessa to revitalize the country’s economy. With the capability to accept large container ships, these terminals could play a crucial role in restoring trade and commerce in Ukraine.

Currently, there are five container terminals in the ports of Greater Odessa — two each in Odessa and Chornomorsk, and one in Pivdenny. The reopening of these terminals is expected to have a positive impact on the economy and supply chain in Ukraine.
