The Amazon Labor Union Joins International Brotherhood of Teamsters

The Amazon Labor Union, the first group of workers at a company warehouse in the United States to organize, has voted to join the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the groups announced in a joint statement on Tuesday.

Around 98% of ALU members voted in favor of joining the Teamsters, the groups noted. Earlier this month, ALU and Teamsters announced that they were taking steps towards joining forces, with the final step being the vote by ALU members to ratify this move.

This news could put pressure on Amazon for negotiations with ALU, a union from New York that is still trying to reach an agreement with the company.

«Together, with hard work, courage, and conviction, Teamsters and ALU will boldly fight to ensure Amazon workers have fair job conditions and safe working conditions in a union contract,» said Sean O’Brien, General President of Teamsters.

ALU gained national recognition two years ago after a historic victory at one of the Amazon warehouses in Staten Island, New York, known as JFK8 facility. The group, founded by current and former JFK8 workers, initially started as a grassroots independent union.
