Archaeologists Discover Ancient Cemetery in Aswan
Archaeologists have discovered an ancient cemetery in Aswan with over 300 tombs, where entire families are buried. This site, founded over 4500 years ago, served as an important trading, quarrying, and military zone, but until now there was no archaeological evidence of the daily life of its inhabitants, reports DailyMail.
Unique Find in Egypt
The team of archaeologists has been working at this site for five years and has uncovered tombs that were used for 900 years. Each tomb contained 30 to 40 mummies. Archaeologist Patrizia Piacentini from the University of Milan emphasized that the burial site covers more than 80,000 square meters and contains up to 10 terraces of ancient tombs, located on a hill next to the modern Mausoleum of Aga Khan III. «This is a truly unique find for Egypt, something similar to the City of the Dead,» she added.
A City with Rich History
Aswan, located on the eastern bank of the Nile, was one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, known as Swenett and Swan, which means «market». It is a city with a rich history that was situated on a trade route where various goods were brought and taken away.
The first tomb in Aswan was discovered back in 2019, where archaeologists found four mummies, including two children. Recent studies have shown that next to them are a woman, possibly their mother, and a man, possibly their father.
