The Deterioration of Water Quality in Lviv Region

The water quality in the rivers of the Lviv region has deteriorated over the past month, as reported by the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Lviv Regional State Administration.

In April of this year, specialists from the Basin Water Resources Management noted a deterioration in the quality of surface water in the Western Bug and San rivers at 23 observation points within the Ukrainian part of the Vistula River basin.

The lowest water quality indicators were recorded in the following rivers:

  • the Poltva River — in the content of dissolved oxygen, organic, biogenic substances, and pesticides;
  • the Western Bug River below the mouth of the Poltva River — in organic, biogenic substances, and pesticides;
  • the Svynia River below the city of Zhovkva — in organic, biogenic substances, aromatic and volatile hydrocarbons, pesticides;
  • the Marunka River below the city of Vynnyky — in organic and biogenic substances;
  • the Yarychivka River below the village of Novyi Yarychiv — in organic substances, aromatic and volatile hydrocarbons;
  • the Malehivka River (village of Malehiv) — in organic and biogenic substances;
  • the Zolochivka River below Zolochiv — in organic and biogenic substances.

Compared to March, the best water quality was observed in the Zavadivka (village of Hrushiv) and Vyshnia (city of Mostyska) rivers, while the water quality in the Yarychivka, Rata, Moshchanka, Svynia, Viar (Vihor), Shklo, and Blekh rivers deteriorated. Other rivers showed slight changes in water quality.
