The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has instructed the Secretary-General of the Council, Maria Pejčinović-Burić, to start preparing a potential agreement between Ukraine and the Council of Europe regarding the establishment of a Tribunal. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine noted that this is «an important practical step» towards the creation of a special tribunal to consider crimes committed by Russia.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba emphasized that Ukraine will continue to work to ensure fair justice in a fully functioning tribunal.
«This is crucial not only for Ukrainians who have become victims of Russian aggression, but also for everyone who seeks a peaceful and secure world,» he stressed.
It is worth reminding that in January of last year, the European Parliament called for the establishment of an international tribunal to consider the crimes of aggression by Russia and Belarus against Ukraine. In June, discussions began in the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on the possibility of starting the work of an international special tribunal regarding the actions of the Russian Federation as early as 2024.
