One of the most discussed issues is the reduction of the maximum military age from 27 to 25. This change has its pros and cons.

In the Verkhovna Rada, in May of last year, a law was passed to lower the maximum age for conscription from 27 to 25, however, President Zelensky has not yet signed it or vetoed it.

The authors of the bill No. 9281 amending the Law of Ukraine «On Military Duty and Military Service» believe that in the case of reducing the maximum military age to 25, draft boards will have enough time (1-3 years) to perform the military duty and call citizens of Ukraine for compulsory military service.

«At the same time, the presence of citizens on the military registry of conscripts until the age of 27 and the need for their annual arrival at the territorial recruitment and social support centers in order to confirm the right to deferment from conscription, as well as to undergo medical examinations lead to significant financial costs,» the explanatory note says.

In addition, the prolonged presence of citizens on the military registry of conscripts during martial law is ineffective, considering that a significant number of people fit for military service who do not have the status of conscripts cannot be called up for military service in case of mobilization. And what is also important: when this law comes into force, it will partially solve the issue of replenishing the mobilization human reserve.

Our Western partners also believe that more young people should be involved in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

«I understand President Zelensky’s desire to keep the youth for the future… But the fact is that Russia is covertly mobilizing the entire country,» wrote former British Defense Minister Ben Wallace in The Telegraph at the end of last year.

Reducing the military age from 27 to 25 is also proposed in a new bill on strengthening mobilization, which is currently under consideration in parliament. According to military experts, this is inevitable if the issue of the disappearance of Ukrainians as a nation arises.
